Invitation Day 2011_1The annual Mens' Invitation Day is a time when members are able to share golf, food and fun with their guests; where the course can be presented at its best and where old friendships can be enjoyed and new ones formed. Each year the club is able to organise a successful and well attended day and this year proved to be no different and was certainly more eventful than most.

The day commenced with the traditional cup of coffee and breakfast followed by a nine hole four ball, better ball Stapleford "starter" with a ham salad recovery lunch. The eighteen post prandial holes started in showery conditions but the threatening weather won the day half way round when the skies literally opened and torrential rain flooded the greens. A decision was made to stop the competition after all groups had played nine holes and all competitors retreated to the clubhouse for showers, drinks and an evening meal.

Club Captain, Phil Softley's playing partner Brian (who had travelled up from Hereford for the day) decided that, as the day had ended early, he would take the Captain's car to Phil's home in order to start the long journey home. However, the Captain's car left the road at Coldham. Fortunately, Brian was uninjured but the Captain had to leave earlier prior to the meal and presentations.

Vice-Captain Stephen Layton thanked all members and their guests for taking part and particularly thanked Norman Topliss for checking the cards and Alex Oldham for being the day's starter and for helping out in other areas of the day's event. Thanks was also expressed for the caterers and for Peter Barnes and Ellie behind the bar.

The overall winners, with 40 points, were Lui Grazziano (March GC) and Mike Robinson (Vice-Captain, Ramsey GC). In second place was Nick Carter (March GC) and Tim Hines (Tydd St Giles GC).
